Em hebraico, Chanuc\u00e1 significa inaugura\u00e7\u00e3o. A festa tem esse nome para lembrar que, ap\u00f3s a profana\u00e7\u00e3o pelos sel\u00eaucidas, o templo foi \u201creinaugurado\u201d. Para marcar o evento, era necess\u00e1rio o acendimento da menor\u00e1, o tradicional candelabro judaico de sete bra\u00e7os. Por\u00e9m, foi encontrado um \u00fanico frasco de \u00f3leo puro para acend\u00ea-lo, quantidade que n\u00e3o era suficiente para mais de uma noite. Mesmo assim, o candelabro foi aceso e manteve sua chama durante as oito noites que levaram at\u00e9 a prepara\u00e7\u00e3o de um novo \u00f3leo.
